I heard that 2 cats have tested positive – Can my pet get COVID-19?
The CDC announced on Wednesday, April 22 that 2 pet cats in New York State tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. While concerning, what we know is that these cats contracted the virus from people, and there is no information suggesting that pets can transmit the virus to people. And the good news for both cats is that they had only mild symptoms and are expected to fully recover.
How do I keep my pets safe?
Guidance from the CDC is to treat your pet just as you would any other family member in your household:
- Practice social distancing with people and pets. For cats, this means keeping them indoors so they cannot come in contact with people or pets from outside your household. For dogs, avoid dog parks and walk using a leash while maintaining 6’ distance from other people and pets.
- If you are sick with symptoms or are confirmed COVID-19 positive, avoid contact with your pet. If possible, have a friend or family member care for your pet until you recover.
- If you come in contact with pets from outside your household, wash your hands thoroughly.
