Accounts Manager & Systems Administrator
Meet Mel, our Accounting Director and Systems Administrator. Mel has worked at Frontier since January of 2005.
So, do you go by Mel or do you have any nicknames?
Mel actually is my nickname – I started life as Melissa, but since there are two others at FVH, I stick with Mel. That’s okay though, I prefer it! I have, however, been called a whole host of other nicknames here at Frontier – pretty much anything that can have “Mel” inserted into it has been used, including Melly, Melster and increasingly more complex ones such as Melanocious or Mellennium.
In your words, what is your job at Frontier?
Simply put, my primary job is to keep track of the money moving around Frontier. As the in-house accountant and bookkeeper, I pay bills, enter deposits, and post transactions. Each month, I do extensive financial reporting to help Owner Dr. Loepp and Practice Manager Megan analyze and balance client needs with the hospital’s resources. I also work with our CSRs on all things financial, including client accounts, banking, and payment plans.
I’m the System Administrator as well, which means I maintain our technology network to assist and enhance both the medical care that our patients receive, and the quality of customer service we can offer our clients. Practically speaking, that means that I spend my hours here bouncing between working with Quickbooks, helping our CSRs with financial issues, and running around the hospital knocking sense into computers. It gets hectic but I love that no two days are the ever same!
Why did you decide to work at Frontier?
When I first came to Frontier, I was overwhelmed by the compassion, warmth, and professionalism shown by the staff. It immediately felt like an environment where I could flourish, where each day is more than just a work day – it is an opportunity to truly help people. I started as a Customer Service Representative (CSR), then after about five years, I decided to go back to school to earn my degree in Financial Accounting. I’m lucky that Frontier had a place for me and I’ve been able to do what I love, while still working where I love!
Do you have any pets?
I have two feline children, both males. Neko was my “first born,” and will be turning twelve this summer. He was taken from his mother too early, and though we’ve had to address behavioral issues in the past, he’s mellowed in his older age to be a sweet, affectionate boy. His favorite place to be is right next to my head with his face buried in my hair, while he purrs and purrs. I also have Tiki, an eleven-year-old Bengal that I adopted from Frontier around 2007. He is better entertainment than TV, with all of his many personality quirks! He is extremely playful, very vocal, and since Bengals were bred to hunt water birds, feels the need to get every single mousie wet before he plays with it. He frequently plays fetch, and I often look up from my computer to see 4 or 5 sopping wet toys scattered around my feet.
Tell us a little-known fact about you!
In my spare time, I like to make jewelry, and I have an extensive collection of tools, wire, supplies, and beads. My husband frequently jokes that I could start my own bead shop!
